When installed on a properly prepared sub-base with adequate drainage, Indian sandstone performs reliably in typical British weather conditions and remains a practical, long-term paving solution.

With correct installation on a well-prepared sub-base using a full mortar bed, Indian sandstone paving can last for around 30 years in normal domestic garden use. It is widely used for patios, pathways and outdoor seating areas where durability and natural appearance are both important.

Longevity depends on factors such as the quality of the stone, the bedding method, drainage, jointing and ongoing maintenance. When installed and maintained properly, it can remain in service for decades and in many cases extend beyond 50 years.

Sealing Indian sandstone paving is optional and depends on personal preference. In most cases, especially for riven Indian sandstone, UK homeowners and landscapers do not seal the surface, as the natural colour variation and weathering are considered part of the material’s character. The change in appearance between wet and dry conditions is a natural feature of Indian sandstone and contributes to its visual appeal over time.

For sawn and honed or smooth sandstone paving slabs, sealing may be chosen if a consistently clean and “fresh” appearance is preferred, particularly just after installation. In this case, sealing usually needs to be reapplied every two years to maintain that look. Over time, as the initial newness becomes less important, many users stop sealing and allow the stone to weather naturally, resulting in a similar appearance to unsealed paving.

Indian sandstone paving with a riven surface generally offers good slip resistance due to its naturally uneven texture, making it suitable for patios, garden paths and outdoor seating areas. For smooth or sawn Indian sandstone paving slabs, the surface can still provide adequate slip resistance in dry conditions, but when wet, it is not recommended for more active use and extra care should be taken.

However, when dust, soil, algae or other debris builds up on the surface and is not regularly cleaned, these materials can sit on top of the stone. In wet conditions, this build-up can become slippery, especially if maintenance has been neglected.

Indian sandstone paving is commonly available in practical single sizes such as 900 x 600 and 600 x 600 slabs, which create a clean and consistent patio layout.

Mixed patio packs are also widely used, combining several slab sizes to create a traditional paving pattern often seen in classic British garden patios, typically available in 3-size, 4-size and 5-size mixed formats.
