Granite paving is a premium outdoor stone choice for UK patios, paths, steps, driveway details and long-life landscaping projects. It is selected where strength, low water absorption, a clean appearance and reliable stock supply are important.

Granite paving slabs are among the strongest natural stone paving options used for UK patios, garden paths, steps and commercial landscaping projects. Granite has a dense crystalline structure, relatively low water absorption and high surface strength. These characteristics make correctly specified and installed granite a dependable choice for long-term outdoor use. Compared with many other natural stone paving slabs, granite offers strong resistance to wear and weathering.

Silver Grey Granite 20 mm Technical Test Report

Independent testing of our Silver Grey Granite 20 mm paving recorded water absorption of 0.17%, dry flexural strength of 17.7 MPa, dry compressive strength of 129 MPa, abrasion resistance of 33, and coefficients of friction of 0.72 when dry and 0.69 when wet.

These results apply specifically to the tested Silver Grey Granite 20 mm product. The report supports its intended use on correctly constructed external patios, terraces, paths and pedestrian areas. It does not declare the 20 mm format for routine vehicle loading and must not be represented as a UKAS certificate.

For homeowners, landscapers and trade buyers, granite paving is often chosen for projects that need a clean, hard-wearing and long-lasting finish. It works well for modern patios, traditional garden paths, driveway borders, entrance areas, outdoor steps and structured hard landscaping. A flamed or textured granite surface provides practical outdoor grip, while the stone’s hardness helps it withstand regular foot traffic, garden furniture and changing British weather. Vehicle applications require a suitable granite format and a correctly designed installation system.

Granite paving is not limited to standard patio slabs. It also includes a wider group of granite landscaping products used to build complete outdoor spaces, including granite setts, granite coping stones and edging, granite bullnose steps and granite kerbs and edging stones. These materials are commonly used together for patios, driveways, steps, borders, edging and more formal garden layouts.

Granite Paving for Patios, Driveways and Outdoor Landscaping

Granite is especially valued where strength, low water absorption and long service life are required. For patios and garden paths, 20 mm granite paving slabs can provide a stable natural stone surface when laid on a correctly prepared sub-base and full mortar bed. The tested Silver Grey Granite 20 mm product is intended for patios, terraces, paths and pedestrian paving; it is not declared for routine vehicle loading.

For driveways and other vehicle areas, smaller granite setts or correctly specified thicker granite slabs are generally more appropriate than large 20 mm patio slabs. Depending on the product dimensions, expected load and installation design, granite formats of approximately 50 mm may be considered. Driveway performance depends on the complete construction system, including slab or sett size, thickness, sub-base design, bedding method, edge restraint, jointing and drainage.

In UK landscaping, grey granite paving remains one of the most practical and popular choices because it works with brick houses, rendered walls, lawns, gravel, planting and contemporary garden designs. Darker colours such as black granite create a stronger modern contrast, while warmer or pink granite tones can suit more traditional or decorative layouts.

Granite Paving Compared with Porcelain, Indian Sandstone and Limestone

Granite paving sits at the stronger and harder end of the outdoor paving market. It is usually chosen when long-term durability, surface strength and a natural stone appearance are more important than the lowest material cost or the easiest installation.

The table below compares granite paving with porcelain paving, Indian sandstone paving and limestone paving for common UK patios, garden paths, driveways and outdoor landscaping projects.

Material Main Strengths Possible Limitations Best Used For
Granite paving Very hard, dense and highly durable, with relatively low water absorption. Suitable for patios, paths, steps, edging, setts and correctly specified vehicle areas. Heavier to handle and harder to cut than many softer stones. Large 20 mm patio slabs should not automatically be specified for routine vehicle loading. Long-life patios, paths, steps, commercial landscaping, kerbs, setts and driveways using a suitable granite format and construction system.
Porcelain paving Low maintenance, consistent colour, rectified edges, low water absorption and modern surface finishes. Requires correct slurry primer, full mortar bed and careful installation. It is manufactured rather than natural stone. Modern patios, low-maintenance gardens, outdoor dining areas and clean contemporary designs.
Indian sandstone paving Natural colour variation, riven texture, traditional patio character and wide colour choice. More porous than granite and porcelain. Colour, texture and thickness variation should be expected with natural stone. Traditional UK patios, cottage gardens, natural landscaping and projects where variation is part of the design.
Limestone paving Natural stone appearance with a smoother, softer-looking surface than many riven sandstones. Some limestone colours, especially darker tones, may weather or lighten over time. It is generally softer than granite. Patios, paths and garden areas where a calm natural stone finish is preferred.

Granite Paving - Frequently Asked Questions

Are Granite Paving Slabs Good?

Yes. Granite paving slabs are a strong, hard-wearing and long-lasting choice for patios, paths, steps and other outdoor areas. Granite has relatively low water absorption and good resistance to wear, frost and changing British weather.

For outdoor use, choose granite with a textured finish, such as flamed or bush-hammered, and install it on a correctly prepared base with suitable drainage.

Is Granite Good for a Patio?

Yes. Granite is an excellent patio material because it is dense, durable and resistant to regular foot traffic and weathering. Its clean appearance works particularly well in contemporary gardens, while different colours and formats can also suit traditional landscaping.

A flamed or otherwise textured surface should be used outdoors, and the slabs must be laid on a stable full mortar bed over a properly prepared sub-base.

What Are the Downsides of Granite Paving Slabs?

The main disadvantages of granite paving are its weight, hardness and installation difficulty. Granite slabs can be heavy to handle and usually require suitable lifting methods and diamond cutting equipment. Installation may therefore take more time and skill than with some softer paving materials.

Granite can also cost more than basic concrete paving or some sandstone options. Smooth, polished or honed granite may become slippery outdoors, so a flamed, bush-hammered or otherwise textured finish should be selected for patios, paths and steps.

Is Granite Paving Slippery When Wet?

Granite paving can be slippery when wet if it has a smooth, polished or honed surface. Outdoor granite with a flamed, bush-hammered or similarly textured finish provides substantially better grip and is the appropriate choice for patios, paths and steps.

Surface finish is not the only factor. Algae, moss, wet leaves, mud and poor drainage can make any paving slippery, so regular cleaning and effective drainage remain important.

Does Granite Paving Need to Be Sealed?

Granite paving does not always need to be sealed. It is a dense natural stone with relatively low water absorption, and many outdoor granite patios perform well without regular sealing.

A compatible penetrating sealer may be used where additional stain resistance is wanted, especially around outdoor kitchens and dining areas. Test any treatment on a spare piece first because sealers can alter the stone’s appearance.

How Long Does Granite Paving Last?

Correctly specified and installed granite paving can last for several decades. Granite is one of the hardest natural paving stones and is widely used in patios, streets, public spaces and commercial landscapes where long-term resistance to wear is required.

Its service life depends on the sub-base, mortar bed, jointing, drainage, stone thickness and expected load. Installation failure is more likely to shorten its life than normal surface wear.

How Much Does Granite Paving Cost?

The cost of granite paving depends on the colour, finish, slab size, thickness and pack quantity. The live price shown with each product is the most accurate material price because stock and transport costs can change.

For a fully installed patio, the total cost must also include excavation, sub-base preparation, drainage, bedding mortar, slurry primer, jointing, cutting and labour. Difficult access, complex patterns and extensive ground preparation can increase the final price substantially.

What Thickness of Granite Paving Is Typically Used?

Granite slabs around 20 mm thick are commonly used for residential patios, paths and other areas carrying normal foot traffic when they are installed on a suitable full mortar bed.

Driveways and heavier commercial applications may require thicker granite, often around 30–50 mm, or smaller-format granite setts. The correct specification depends on the slab size, base construction, bedding method and expected load.

Can Granite Paving Be Used for Driveways?

Yes, but the granite format and construction must be suitable for vehicle loading. Granite setts and correctly specified thicker slabs are generally more appropriate for driveways than large 20 mm patio slabs.

Driveway performance depends on stone thickness and dimensions, sub-base depth, edge restraint, bedding, jointing, drainage and installation quality. A specification intended only for pedestrian patios should not automatically be used for vehicles.

Is Granite Paving Easy to Maintain?

Yes. Granite paving is relatively low maintenance because it is dense, hard-wearing and resistant to normal outdoor weathering. Regular sweeping and occasional washing with water and a suitable mild stone cleaner are usually sufficient.

Remove leaves, soil, algae and moss before they build up, particularly in shaded or poorly drained areas. Avoid harsh or unsuitable acidic cleaners unless the product has been confirmed as compatible with the stone and jointing material.
