What are clay pavers?

Clay is the better choice when the paving is a visible part of the architecture rather than simply a hardstanding surface. It works especially well alongside brick façades, garden walls, heritage properties and contemporary homes that need a warmer, more tactile material beneath them.

What is concrete block paving?

Concrete block paving is made from cement, aggregates, water and, in many ranges, pigments. It is pressed or moulded and cured. Its greatest advantage is breadth: concrete manufacturers can offer a large selection of sizes, shapes, colours, textures and price points.

That makes concrete a strong option where a project needs a precise module, a highly even finish, easy local availability or a lower initial budget. Premium concrete blocks can look excellent; they should not be judged by the cheapest driveway ranges.

Which keeps its colour better?

Clay generally has the advantage. Its colour runs through the body of the paver, rather than being dependent on a surface treatment. Clay will still weather and collect marks in use, but its fundamental fired tone remains part of the material.

Concrete paving can retain a good appearance for many years, particularly in higher-quality ranges. However, concrete colour, surface wear and weathering performance depend more heavily on the individual product, the exposure of the site and its maintenance. Avoid blanket claims that all concrete rapidly fades; choose a reputable range and judge the product itself.

Which looks better?

For visual depth and long-term character, clay is usually better. Slight changes in shade are a natural feature of kiln-fired material, not a fault. When pavers are blended from several packs during installation, that variation creates a surface with rhythm and depth.

Concrete is usually more uniform. This can be an advantage for minimalist schemes that need a very controlled, repeated appearance. The design decision is therefore simple: choose clay for material character; choose concrete for visual consistency and wide design choice.

Which is better for a driveway?

Both can work. The decisive issue is not just clay versus concrete, but whether the specific paver is suitable for vehicle loading and whether the construction beneath it is correct. Sub-base depth, drainage, bedding, edge restraints and laying pattern all affect performance.

For either material, a weak sub-base or unsupported edge can lead to movement and settlement. Confirm the intended use with the supplier and use an installer who understands paving construction, not just surface laying.

Which is more expensive?

Clay pavers commonly cost more than standard concrete blocks at the point of purchase. Slim brick formats may also take longer to lay because there are more units per square metre. Concrete has a wider price spectrum: basic blocks are economical, but premium architectural concrete can approach or exceed the cost of some clay paving.

Compare complete installed costs, not price per unit. Excavation, waste removal, sub-base, drainage, cutting, edge restraints, jointing, labour and delivery can make a much larger difference to the final figure than a small variation in paver price.

Maintenance, sealing and reuse

Both surfaces benefit from ordinary care: sweep away leaves and soil, treat moss or algae when needed, manage weeds in joints, clean spills promptly and correct local settlement early. Neither material automatically needs sealing. A sealer can alter colour, sheen and slip characteristics, so use it only where it is compatible with the product and serves a clear purpose.

Both clay and concrete systems can be repaired locally because individual units can be lifted. For sustainability, assess the whole picture: manufacturing, transport, expected service life, maintenance, repairability and the potential to reuse sound pavers.
